::masterbates furiously::

TORONTO - Keira Knightley risked rankling a Toronto audience by striding into a film festival press conference with a Montreal Canadiens jersey slung across her shoulders.

The British movie star says she did so at the bidding of her "Dangerous Method" co-star Viggo Mortensen, who is a big Habs fan.

Mortensen says he gave his co-star a "thorough coaching" on the politics of Canadian hockey before coming out. He proudly displayed a Habs jersey bearing the name Lafleur on the back, as well as a Scott Gomez sweater.

Knightley says they thought it would get the ire of their Toronto-bred director, David Cronenberg, and it did.

Cronenberg called the stunt "perverse" and expressed mock dismay that it didn't seem to bother Knightley.

Rookie camp kicks off today. Drop the puck!!

No Yemelin or Diaz on the rookie camp roster, which is a bit surprising. The battle for 7th Dman should be the fiercest at the regular camp: Yemelin, Wojwitka, Diaz, Mitera, Henry, and St. Denis are your candidates, and probably in that order.

What do the Habs do with their $4M cap space? I say sit on it in case Markov blows a tire again, or keep it for a rental player at the deadline.

Hockey!!!!

Good news/bad news:

Most of the regular Habs were on the ice today in Brossard. Gorges was on the ice with pretty much the entire team (Subban was missing).

Markov was also on the ice, but he was skating in a no-contact capacity with injured players Louis Leblanc and Olivier Fortier, after the other players left the ice.

Alex Henry is already making a positive impression. He showed up to camp with the lowest body fat% and is dominating all the strength tests according to Darche. He is a 6'5" bruising d-man, but has been known to not be the fastest skater. He played a few games in Montreal two seasons ago, and was one of the last cuts at last year's camp. He spent the season as captain in Hamilton because he would have to clear re-entry waivers to play in Montreal, which he probably wouldn't. Martin liked what he saw, which makes me wonder if he will make the team this year given that there is a spot on the roster open. Does the team need another another O'Byrne type player? Should Weber be worried about his job?

Yemelin apparently dropped some huge checks in his first intra-squad game, notably hipchecking Pacioretty and sending him up in the air. I bet the crowd held their breath until Pax got up. Max and Yemelin apparently got into a heated debate after Yemelin tried to drop him again several plays later.

He may be out of shape, but he came as advertised. Will be interesting to follow.

Blair Betts is also still out with an injury. It seems that all the late additions that Pierre Gauthier shrewdly made to bolster the line-up are for naught.

Habs looked pretty good yesterday overall. How about that DD line?

One question that came to mind as I was watching the game is why is Gionta always paired with Gomez?? Every other player on the team gets shuffled around the line-up but those two guys seem to be married at the hip. I understand that they had some great chemistry in New Jersey a while ago, but I'm surprised that Jacques Martin continues to stick the two together.

Irony: this team needs Gomez and Spacek back in the worst possible way. I have no idea what can help this team at this point. Desharnais, Palushaj, Cole and Engqvist are useless, and the power play is embarrassing. Campoli will help when he returns, but depth is just such a glaring issue with this team. Hopefully Markov doesn't need another surgery. Word is that the doctors don't know what is causing the swelling hence why Markov has been in Florida for three weeks with Dr. James Andrews. Won't be long until the 'fire Martin' chants start.

On a positive note Kostitsyn, Eller, Moen was a great line tonight.

A bunch of moves today to shore up the depth a little bit.

- Palushaj and Engqvist were sent down to Hamilton. Good. Neither are ready for the big time yet.
- Mike Bluden called up to replace Palushaj. Placeholder move until Ryan White is back from injury. Bluden had a good training camp.
- Habs acquire Petteri Nokelainen and Garrett Stafford from Phoenix for Brock Trotter and 7th rnd pick. Nokelainen is an upgrade on Engqvist and fills the necessity that the Blair Betts cock-up caused. Stafford down to the Bulldogs. Brock Trotter did not impress at training camp and was the first one cut. Clearly his days were numbered.

All in all positive moves to ice a better 4th line.

I cant get over how similar the first periods were in the past two games. Maybe slow starts are the key. JM must be losing hisshit as he watches. I cant get over how stoic he is. Fantastic recovery in both games too. If people blame the coaches for the bad shit then they also deserve kudos for the good shit so nice adjustments Jackieboy.

And let the record show I would have strongly considered the Mike Keenan School Of Goaler Pullin' and moved Carey to the bench after the Bruins opened up the score. Holy fuck I was mad. Has Price let in anything worse in his NHL career? I asked MrBigTime that question tonight and he gave a "100%" no. I know I am drawing blanks but that shouldnt surprise anyone.

I also missed Diaz making, what I think, is the play of the game. I saw it live as I was bouncing around my own underbelly and thought Price had gaffed then saved. To be honest? I am still in a bit of shock. That was a really fun game to watch. I didnt expect it to be that good for this early in the season. Game 7 overflow with referee's trying to keep her mellow.

I didn't get a feed of the game last night, but I was scoreboard watching, and I was pleasantly shocked by the win.
From all indications Eric Cole is starting to get his groove on. Thank GOD. I was a little surprised that Max Pac only got 12 minutes of ice time, but looking closely at the ice times, it looks like everyone's time was carefully managed. Gorges played the role of Hamrlik with 23 minutes played, and everyone else was under 20.

Louis Leblanc had three points in his Bulldogs debut, including a nifty OT goal.

All is well in Habs land today, but two wins does not playoffs make.

Habs sign 2010 1st round pick Jarred Tinordi to three year entry level contract starting 2012-2013. He is currently out of action with an eye injury stemming from a fight.

Tinordi becomes the 50th player under contract with the Habs, the maximum allowed by any organization.

The rumour going around was that the Habs were negotiating a contract with Brendan Gallagher's agent, so this one comes as a surprise as Gallagher will not be able to sign a contract until the Habs jettison a contract.

The Habs currently have $24.3M worth in injuries right now. That's 37% of the total allowable cap space this season. Add to that Plekanec getting banged up the last couple of games, and Subban playing with a bum shoulder, and we got ourselves quite the calamity right now.

EDIT: Spacek and Gill to miss at least the next two games. Kostitsyn is officially on the IR. Squid back tonight.

EDIT: Only ONE defenceman will have played more than 100 games in the NHL for tonight's game.

The handling of Boucher and Muller by the Habs will be judged more accurately in about two to three years.

A couple of years ago all those guys wanted was their roles reversed: Boucher to coach at the NHL level as an assistant to Martin, and Muller as head coach in Hamilton. The Habs wouldn't do it, so they both left the organization.

So Markov is going under the knife for a third time. Gauthier announced that this "minor" surgery will keep him out at least another three weeks.

We can safely say that Markov will not play in 2011. According to Gauthier there was true belief that Markov was going to play on this California trip, but some persistent swelling after practice caused Markov to go see a doctor. the surgery will remove some hardened tissue.

Sadly the injuries to Markov, Campoli, and Spacek can't really be attributed to the poor record as the defense has been pretty rock solid, even if the Habs have used 10 defensemen this season.

The offence is generating nothing, which is what you can expect from two inexperienced youngsters and a dreadful burden on the cap playing center. Besides Plekanec there is no sign of an elite centerman on the team or in the farm system. The power forward issue has been somewhat resolved with Pax and Cole, but now center is in serious need of a reboot. There is not enough talent on forward right now to make this a playoff team.

While I agree that I would like to see some reboot at the center position, been waiting for that for about 15 years or so, I've also said the following before and I will say it again. Gomez provides much more than the haters are willing to admit. Yes, I would like to see his production increase by about 100 percent but the Habs dont have the puck when he isnt in the lineup. It really is that simple. Just look at the Cammy-Pleks-Gionta line. Holyfuckballs.

Howdy, fellow Canadiens fans. Are the Habs killing your will to live? You’re not alone. The entire fanbase is so depressed we can’t even muster up the energy to flip Jacques Martin’s car or set his notebook on fire. See that? I can’t even come up with an original joke. So how do we cope with what appears to be a hopeless case of mediocrity that doesn’t show any signs of improving in the near future?

As you know, we here at The Active Stick are all about handy guides for hockey fans. Unfortunately, “we here” really just means “me” and since I’m a Canadiens fan, my brain comes with a built-in editor that erases the bad memories from the 90′s and early 2000′s so nothing’s left but the glory years and some smoke and mirrors from the last five years.

Seeing as I’m ill-equipped to provide my fellow Habs fans with guidance on this particular issue, I decided to outsource and ask the experts – also known as fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs. This year, they’re pretty busy watching stuff known as “goals” and “wins” while we’re stuck watching… not that, but a few of them were gracious enough to stop laughing for a couple of seconds and provide me with survival tips they learned from their years of misery. Most advocated heavy drinking. Here’s a selection of some other advice:

•PPP(mlse): Look for the humour, deify the past (you guys have that down pat), and hate your team with a passion.

•So_Truculent: Be wittier, faster than every other hockey fan digging on your team. It’ll be tough to beat Leafs fans. #pros

•1967ers: At least we’re not Ottawa.

•Down Goes Brown: The first two decades are rough, but by the start of the third you should start to go numb.

•Chris: Guy who blows ends up getting a couple game point streak going? Go crazy, he’s the next Crosby.

•Bitter Leaf Fan: If you have realistic expectations, it’s hard to be disappointed. It’s also fun rooting for coaches & execs to get canned.

•Chris: Because of the bonus point system, “6 points back” always seems like you’re only a couple of wins out of the playoffs. Pretend that’s true, it helps. In fact, you’ll find that counting is a bad idea in general, because whatever you’re counting, it’s not good.

•11Leafs: Drink heavily… this was followed with some other tips but I didn’t get past that first part.

•1967ers: It’s nice not to be conflicted on beautiful Saturday nights in May.

•Bitter Leaf Fan: Thanks to the loser point, it’s unlikely the Habs will go an entire decade under .500 like the Leafs of the 80s.

PPP (in response): New divisional playoffs make six years out of the playoffs more likely though.

•Chris: You probably already have a whipping boy on the team. Use this opportunity to expand your portfolio on that front.

•doogie2k: As an Oilers fan first and Habs fan second, my advice: Learn the consensus top five draftees by heart.

•67sound: Is your terrible team also owned by a vicious xenophobic racist? Are they covering up systemic child rape? Has your hated rival won 7 Cups since your last? No? Then count your blessings. #Leafsfanfrom80s

•Bitter Leaf Fan: Loathing JFJ got me me through four of five years of mediocrity.

•Down Goes Brown: Hope your team can win a few playoff rounds against some team dumb enough to hire Jacques Martin.

Michael Blunden called up by the Habs. Possibly to replace an injured Travis Moen.

Blunden was a 2nd round pick for Chicago in 2005. He was a free agent signing for the Habs during the summer, and currently leads the Bulldogs in points (by default really, since he is the only one who wasn't called up at some point).

If the Moen and Gionta injuries are serious, then Gauthier might be forced to make a move. There is depth in defence which can be moved for a forward.

Martin essentially benched Leblanc in the third while Plekanec and Cammalleri continue to have zero chemistry together.

Also: Darche played more minutes 5-on-5 than Pacioretty.

Ah yes, insinuations are obvious. You should be coach of the team.

A - Leblanc weighs less than I do and it showed last night. He was getting pushed around rather easily at times. It was a tight game in the third and good ole Jackie shortened his bench. Pleks generated more chances last night than he has in the 10 games prior.

B - I thought Darche was flying last night (for Darche).

I am completely shocked. I would have lost a ton of money had someone offered me a "Martin gets fired before the season is out" bet. In my view this is, without a doubt, 100 percent a desperation move on Gauthier's part.

Martin's 'system' might be boring to watch but with that group of players you cant knock the results the past two playoff runs. This year the issues have been all because of the back-end. I dont have a good feeling how this is going to play out for the rest of the season but that is simply my initial reaction. Carey Price better be fucking ready if Les Brahs decide to open up the stables.

Hey Ollie, I could be wrong but I think Cunneyworth ran the Habs awesome powerplay. But again, thats been a personnel issue from what I have witnessed.

The NHL announced that it will not have a hearing for Montreal's Erik Cole, who delivered a check to New Jersey's Adam Larsson Saturday night in which Larsson was struck in the head.

While announcing that Cole would not receive supplemental discipline Sunday, Shanahan said, "We reviewed this play extensively. The overriding factor in this two-minute minor penalty not receiving further supplemental discipline is the significant change of position to Larsson's head as he bends over and lunges for the puck just prior or simultaneous to the check by Erik Cole."

Of all the things that Gauthier has done and not done, it seems that putting a unilingual coach behind the bench will be the catalyst for the next French Revolution.

Molson already cut Cunneyworth's legs from under him when he issued a calming statement that the next coach will be french. What incentive does that give Cunneyworth to try at this point? Molson's move was done out of panic after a wave of Molson product boycotting swept through Quebec.

In my view the Montreal Canadiens need to have a french presence of some sort, despite it giving them a disadvantage overall with the rest of the league. Where I struggle is to determine where the line is drawn between French Canadian and common sense.

Obviously you can't ask to have an entire team made up of French Canadien players. This isn't the 60's anymore and the Habs don't have exclusive rights to Quebec born players. You'd end up with a team of scrubs who fail at what they do. Would the fans be happy about that? Doubt it.
The Habs tried desperately to bring in a FC superstar to be the face of the franchise, think Briere and Lecavalier, but neither of those players wanted to be part of the Montreal circus and the trades ultimately never happened. Would the French media devour the French Canadian saviour? Without a doubt. Look how they have already begun to deify Louis Leblanc.

Should the coach speak french? Well if you listen to the French media, who by the way seriously benefit from a French coach, the answer is a resounding yes. Should that be the overriding criteria? Hell no. Proven success is what this team needs right now. French speaking would be icing on the cake. That's why hiring Patrick Roy would be the dumbest move on the planet.

Should the general manager be French speaking? I wonder what the reaction would be if someone like Dave Tallon was made GM in Montreal. He's built a winner in Chicago, and he is doing the same in Florida right now, a first for that franchise. Would the French media decry a GM of his pedigree? Probably. That's where common sense just plain loses out.

It is clear that a combination of one or more of the above need to speak French to provide the cultural continuity for this century old franchise. However making it a requirement is a handicap, and does this team, who haven't won a Cup in 18 years, really need a handicap, or do they need a solid team of proven winners, from players right up to front office? C'mon common sense, prevail here.

Je suis un Montréalais. J'adore les Canadiens. Je suis francophone. Je veux vomir.

I'm usually very proud of my city but the coverage we are getting in the last few days is down right embarassing. We've had an english coach for 3 days and you would think the whole world is crumbling down. The Journal de Montreal has already voted Cunneyworth off the island and pulled a bullshit stat out of their asses saying that 72% of Quebecers find it unacceptable that the coach can't speak french.

Let me start by saying that I am a firm believer that people are stupid. A person is smart, but people are idiots. You slap a stat like that on the front page of a moronic publication like the Journal and what do you get? A bunch of simpletons who are so bored, that they are willing to call for a boycott of Molson products. Well, that is until they realize than an import will cost you an extra loonie.

Calm down you bunch of freaks! The Canadiens fired the guy you all hated and just because we don't have a french guy right behind him, you're all about to lose your marbles. Jacques Martin was losing the respect of his players. His decisions were borderline insane and he had to go. Randy Cunneyworth isn't the answer, but it certainly isn't because he can't speak french. The team sucks. They suck in english, et ils sucent en francais. Same difference. It ain't Mr. Cunneyworth that will change that.

I'm sick and tired of hearing about the Hab fans in rural areas who don't speak english. Who gives a shit about them? Are they buying tickets? Are they coming into the city and spending their money at the surrounding bars and restaurants? No. They're watching RDS in their log cabins. I never realized you needed to speak english to watch a fucking hockey game on TV. The Montreal Canadiens have millions of fans. They don't need the ignorant racists who would rather see the team lose en francais, than win in english. Newsflash morons, the coach doesn't say anything. EVER. All the news you ever hear is from anonymous sources or figments of the reporter's imagination. I've got news for you assholes. Youppi doesn't speak french either. Are you gonna boycott orange fur now?

Do you really need a french coach to tell you it's Peter Budaj in nets tomorrow night? Or that PK has the flu? Get over yourselves. It's not enough that the rest of the country, er, the continent, is rolling their eyes at the fact that this is front page stuff?

People keep saying that hockey is a religion in Montreal, they think that's why people care so much. BULLSHIT. If hockey was a religion, we'd be more concerned with winning than with language. This is political garbage. There are countless examples around the sports world showing foreigners coming into sports crazed markets and leading their teams to championships. If Ferrari can embrace a german to win countless F1 titles, I think we can relax on the coach's mother tongue.

It's obvious that a bilingual coach is ideal. The Canadiens have made every effort imaginable to make that a reality. Cut them some fucking slack if they choose to fire a guy mid-season and don't choose to throw another 4 year contract at the next frenchman that you will all want fired within 2 years anyways.

Now that I've gotten that outburst out of the way, let's talk about how moronic this decision was. That's right, after telling how idiotic it is that the coach must speak french, I am now saying it was also wrong to have fired Martin in favor of Cunneyworth. Why? It's simple. As much as I think this whole fiasco is ridiculous, I'm not stupid enough to think that it is not a sensitive issue. As a matter of fact, I think we all expected this reaction from our province.

Let me be clear. I wanted Martin out. I thought his message was stale, his treatment of our rookies was not beneficial to their development and I found his constant scribbling in his notebook to be distracting. But firing him just to hire his right hand man, regardless of language, was senseless. Our anemic offense was Cunneyworth's responsability. Why would things be so different now?

The mistake the Habs made is that they had one chance to try and get the public to accept an english coach. To make that happen, you needed a heavy hitter. Someone with a cup, or a Jack Adams, or... a single win as an NHL head coach. I shat on this team for constantly hiring green coaches, from Tremblay to Carbonneau, so I can't possibly be happy with this decision.

Montreal is a place where you can't afford to learn as you go. Not with an average team that is constantly expected to win the cup. You need a name, someone with credibility. Jacques Martin had that. What he didn't have was the good sense not to play Mathieu Darch for 17 minutes a game.

Had they brought in a Babcock, Bylsma, Ruff or Carlyle, the backlash would not have been this hard. Of course you would have the people who would rant about it no matter what, but you could look at them dead in the eye and challenge them to come up with a more qualified coach. By naming Cunneyworth, they opened themselves up to a world of criticism that they can't possibly withstand.

They put this poor bastard in a no win situation. He can't possibly live up to the expectations and the idiot GM who put him there is on his way out anyways.

Bienvenue a Montréal Monsieur Cunneyworth. Now get the fuck out of here.

- Claude Julien, when asked about whether Montreal should have a French coach, answered that he was in Boston, and he didn't care about Montreal.

It actually used to be that way. 1969 was the last year Montreal had territorial rights to players within 50 miles of Montreal, they never had territorial rights to all of Quebec until the NHL draft came along in 1964.

Prior to 1964, all NHL teams had a 50 mile zone that they had exclusive rights to. Montreal was given a 'cultural exemption' from 1964 through 1969. The 1970 draft was the first draft where the best French Canadian player was up for grabs (and Buffalo got him when they chose Gilbert Perreault with the first overall choice).

We're only six points out of a playoff spot, right. That's not completely insurmountable.

Looks like Columbus is going to need a defenceman with a point shot after Wiz went down with a broken ankle... Weber might be available. Also, this may be our only chance to jettison Kaberle.

Josh Gorges signed a six year deal with a cap hit of $3.9M. Great deal for a steady defenseman. Unfortunately it leaves the team very little cap space for next year. Gauthier just bought himself some time with this important signing, however I am still not convinced that he is the right guy to take this team forward.

I love Josh Gorges but as far as I am concerned, Gauthier just played his "buyout" card. He's counting on being able to buy his way out of a shitload of terrible contracts this summer while the NHL deals with their next CBA.

Looks like Geoff Molson has opened his wallet for further bleeding. If not, this franchise is fucking retarded.

Cat Fight The new year got off to a bang for the struggling Montreal Canadiens as defenceman P.K. Subban and centre Tomas Plekanec exchanged punches during practice on Monday.

The two clashed during a one-on-one drill. Both dropped their gloves and threw punches until Josh '3.9 million per for 6 years' Gorges and other teammates stepped in to stop it.

No big punches landed, neither player was hurt, and both players stayed on the ice as practice resumed.

Someone celebrated Lars Eller’s hat trick with a sex toy
By Greg Wyshynski

Have you ever wondered who would think, "Boy, I'd so much rather be the guy who picks up the dead duck thrown from the stands during a hockey game?" The answer, we imagine, is the guy who has to pick up the rubber phallus thrown on the ice in celebration of a hat trick.

According to Gerard Yee on Twitter, somebody at the Montreal Canadiens' 7-3 home victory over the Winnipeg Jets (a) brought a dildo to the game and (b) was compelled to throw it on the ice after Lars Eller tallied his third of four goals on the night. Huh, usually you see those things when you have trouble scoring …
Fans were confused at first, mistaking something red, stiff, immobile and deep in the zone for Hal Gill.
Soon after, Brian Gionta was then seen frantically fleeing the ice, screaming something about a sandworm from "Dune" attacking him. (Yes, that was a height joke. Moving on…)
Whether or not it was a sex toy doesn't really matter. They never said "Play It Again, Sam" in "Casablanca" either. Lars Eller is now irreversibly linked to a red pleasure pole landing on the ice during his 5-point night, as he no doubt found out when the hats and other items collected from his trick were presented to him after the game.
It's nothing to be ashamed of; well, until the Photoshops start rolling in.
An impressive moment from the Canadiens fan base. But you have ways to go to catch the Great Swedish Dildo Shower of '08, friends.

  • DonGoesBrown Said:
Montreal Canadiens fans aren’t very happy these days. The team has been a disappointment all season, with a combination of injuries and lacklustre play leaving them well outside of the current playoff picture.

But apparently that's not even the biggest problem facing the franchise. That honor would be reserved for interim Canadiens' coach Randy Cunneyworth, who's hiring generated controversy because he can't speak French. Tension over that issue may be taken to new heights today, when Canadiens fans (or at least groups claiming to represent them) are reportedly planning a pre-game protest outside of the Bell Centre.

But while the language-based outrage is getting all the attention, it's actually only one of several demonstrations planned for today by fans in Montreal. As it turns out, Canadiens fans are fed up and they're not going to take it anymore.

So forget about which language the coach is speaking. Here are some of the other issues that Montreal Canadiens fans are currently upset about.
•Whenever you call Montreal's 911 emergency line, the automated attendant doesn't get to "report a Boston Bruins body check" until like the third or fourth option.

•The team has refused to release details of team captain Brian Gionta's recent health issue beyond calling it a lower body injury, which on that guy doesn't really narrow it down.

•While it was nice to see them borrow our patented "stuff the ballot box to elect all your mediocre hometown players to the All-Star Game" move, foolish Senator fans forgot the part about including an unrestricted free agent for Brian Burke to overpay in the offseason.

•Scott Gomez continues to score goals at a slightly lower rate than other similarly paid players, such as Cam Ward.

•In addition to his lack of French, coach Cunneyworth often struggles to say even basic English phrases, such as "We played well tonight".

•By the third period of every home game, Youppi is inevitably staggering around waving an empty whiskey bottle and screaming at small children about how 1994 was supposed to be the Expos' year.

•Management now admits they recently gave a $23 million contract extension to Josh Gorges under the mistaken impression that they were actually paying for several players who were all named Josh Gorge.

•Even if you've only got one copy to make, Pierre Gauthier never lets you go ahead in line at the photocopier until he's finished making hundreds of copies of his resume.

•Carey Price is one of the absolute best goaltenders in the entire league and does not get enough respect from the wait a second did he just give up a goal in warmup? BOOOOOO!!!

•Every time we're sitting around reminiscing about all of the great divisional rivalries we've had over the years, some Sabres fan gets all pouty and then we have to pretend to include them too.

•In many Canadian provinces, even after a Habs fan has mentioned the team's 24 Stanley Cups it is still technically legal for a fan of another team to continue talking.

•Look, nobody's saying that the franchise has retired too many numbers, but it does get kind of confusing cheering for a team of 20 players who are all wearing #86.

•When Patrick Roy inevitably takes over as coach he'll be able to explain to the players exactly what it takes to win a Stanley Cup in Montreal in the modern era, which will be depressing because what it takes is for Patrick Roy to be your goaltender.

•Every time we think that we've at least wrapped up the title of "most hopeless Canadian NHL franchise", we catch the highlights of the latest Flames game and realize how far we still have to go.

If you are lucky you have a shelf life of about 3 years with any given team. Once you get fired you are pretty much retained to do something within the organization. They know that going in and there's no 'ouch' to speak of. The life as a coach is what it is. Its not some imaginary totem pole.

Ok, the dust is starting to settle on this trade.

First of all I would to call bullshit on Gauthier for a couple of statements:

"This trade has been in the works for a month"

Bullshit. The comments Cammalleri made turned him into a useful scapegoat in a series of scapegoats as Gauthier tries to save his job yet again.

"I've now realized that this team needs to get bigger"

Bullshit. You realized that last year, and that's why you got Cole in the off-season.

Excluding all the other factors, looking at getting Bourque for Cammalleri:

Pros:
- $3M reduction in salary cap
- bigger, tougher player who can stand in the crease and take abuse
- Same goal-scoring pace

Cons:
- Longer contract
- Lower offensive potential
- Known for disappearing for stretches apparently
- At least one GM said that he was unaware that Squid was on the block, because he would have made an offer. Gauthier did not do his due diligence.
- Repeat offender currently serving a suspension (one more game)

Remainder of deal:
Obtained Patrick Holland and a 2nd round pick for rights to Karri Ramo and a 5th round pick.

Pros:
- Obtained a player with third line potential for a player who openly said that he wouldn't sign with the Habs.
- 2nd round pick for a 5th is a no brainer.

Cons:
- Glut of RW prospects, did not address weakness on LW.
- No viable goalie prospect who can take over for Carey Price in entire organization.

My take? The shock has worn off, Gauthier has taken on yet another long-term contract, but this team wasn't winning before, so a shake up might be able to help. Bourque will not solve the problems, but he may give the team some options that they didn't have before, including clogging up the crease on more than one shift.

Now let's get Gomez to spout off to the media about something, and I will be a happy man.

What would the Canadiens have done if Cammalleri scored three goals during the first two periods?

And why would a team in desperate need of points and very much in the thick of a 1-0 game reduce its roster to 10 forwards for the final 20 minutes?

General manager Pierre Gauthier was not around the Brossard practice facility Friday to answer these questions. And the coach danced around them, saying his third-period focus was on “trying to get line combinations back together and get the game under control.”

I may be Saturday afternoon drunk, but I am so fucking tired with all the negativity surrounding this team right now. Negativity feeds negativity, nothing more. This team will not improve via negativity. Nothing ever does. Everyone should quit bitching over Gauthier, quit bitching over Martin's firing, quit bitching about the Cammalleri trade, and quit bitching about the Kaberle pick-up. This includes me. I am so fucking tired of this season's bad karma. This team will do what it can with what it has been given.

I love this team, the logo, the emblem, the meaning of the team. I want them to be a winner. But I will cheer for them if they are losing. These are dark times, but we shouldn't let that take away from the fact that we are fans of the greatest sports franchise in Canada, and possibly North America (Yankees and Red Sox can make a case).

People don't like Montreal because we know another language besides English, are proud of our extensive history, and sing during a game. Is that a reason to be hated? Who fucking cares. I will sing. I will speak French. I will cheer for this team!

Glad that my comments woke this place up, even if it's at my expense. TM's post made me laugh out loud, I don't get Booche's point, and Sloth's response was just lazy, in line with his name.

Cammalleri's goal was a thing of beauty. I'm curious to see what Bourque will bring to this team.

Kaberle in a shoot out was an interesting choice. Best comment I read was "of course Kaberle looked good during shoot outs at practice, he was shooting on Price".

I wonder how Yakupov is in shoot outs?

Every Habs fan should get drunkasfuck today. Its a celebration bitches!

Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated: My thumb is up - yes, up - to Scott Gomez's unhappy anniversary. Today marks one year since his last NHL goal. That's 58 regular season and playoff games, if you're counting. And believe me, Canadiens fans are counting. They cheered each time he touched the puck Saturday in the 3-0 loss to Washington. You figure a center that plays 15 minutes a game, and who, coincidentally, carries a cap hit of $7.3 million, might be able to put one past a goalie. Maybe the puck could just bounce in off him. Of course that would mean he'd have to be near the net… so scratch that. Why a thumb's up? Well, Gomez is immersed in the mother of all slumps - an epic fail to borrow a modern phrase. But as long as Gomez continues to trail Carolina goalie Cam Ward in the goal-scoring race, Montrealers have something to take their mind off the stunning ineptitude of the entire team, currently last in the Eastern Conference.

I crunched some numbers on Kaberle because yo mama asked me in bed last night:

Number of games Kaberle has played with Habs: 24
Number of points in these 24 games: 14

Number of games with at least one point: 11 (46%)

Correlation between Kaberle getting at least a point and the Habs getting at least a point for the game: 58%

In other words there is a 58% chance that if Kaberle has a point in a game, the Habs will get at least one point for the game in the standings.

If Kaberle is scoring in 46% of his games giving the Habs 58% chance of earning at least one point in those games, the Habs will only earn points for 52% of their remaining 26 games, which is not enough to qualify for the playoffs.

Of course it doesn't take a statistician to tell you that the Habs won't make the playoffs, but again, yo mama asked for it and I gave it to her.

I wish to add some further stats to fuel some necessary conclusions at the end of the season. Hindsight is 20/20, but using points accrual rates and extrapolation, the following regular season points totals were calculated:

1- Overall this season, all things being equal (discounting coaching change and the Kaberle Effect) and using a trend line in Excel over the course of the season up to this point we can expect the Habs to finish with 78 points.

2- Using the winning percentage for the first 9 games where Perry Pearn was still ass coach the team would have earned an abysmal 47 points this year. This number carries a high percentage of error because of the small population size.

3- As the Kaberle trade and the Martin firing happened within two games of each other, these two events can be treated as one as the difference between these two points is essentially statistically insignificant. If we take the measurement at the time of Martin's firing the team would have earned 87 points, still shy of the mythical 92 needed to make the playoffs.

Conclusion: Firing Pearn proved to be the correct choice within statistical error. His removal increased the points accumulation of the team quite significantly. However firing Martin and trading for Kaberle proved to be the absolute opposite as the team's point accumulation rate actually receded at this point.

I think it's nice that the crowd is cheering for Gomez, in an encouraging way rather than sarcastic, showing a form of restraint not seen in a long time. I was kinda hoping that Cunney would at least put him out there for the shootout...
Anyways, he had the lowest TOI of any player on the Habs tonight. Sad. There is really nothing left to salvage here, and I really hope that he will be taken off the books one way or another for next season, as unlikely as that may seem. The only thing he brings to the team is the fact that everyone says that "he is a good guy who works hard". Useless in a salary cap world.

Nevermind. Schultz sent back down to Hamilton already. All he did was warm up with the team prior to tonight's game. I wonder what the story is with this?? Gorges and Subban both came out today saying that they were happy that the Habs called up some muscle to help them out.

Here's something spooky:

Howie Morenz, Blake Geoffrion's great-grandfather wore #7
Bernie Geoffrion, Blake's grandfather wore #5

Hal Gill, the player Blake was traded for wore #75

Anyways, should Blake play with the Habs, the most natural number to wear would of course be #6, recently vacated by Jaro Spacek.

If Blake wants to doom his Montreal career, he can wear his father's Habs jersey number of #20- the 'pump her and dump her' jersey number equivalent for the Habs, given how many players have worn that number in the past decade.

The Habs have over the course of the past season traded away three prospects in order to improve themselves in one way or another. Let's see how they are all faring thus far and see if the Habs won or lost on those trades:

------------------------- -----------

On July 7th the Habs traded Ryan Russell to Columbus for Mike Blunden.

Mike Blunden has played 30 games with the Habs this season after getting called up, and been a serviceable fourth liner with plenty of NHL experience.

Russell has split his time between the NHL and AHL this year, but hasn't put up any significant numbers in either. The fact that he can't stay in the NHL for the league's worst team does not bode well however. He might still develop into a spare part at the NHL level.

I would call this trade a draw, with a slight short-term nod towards the Habs for Blunden putting up more points at the NHL level.

------------------------- -----------

On July 15, the Habs traded Mathieu Carle, a former sure-thing defensive prospect to Anaheim for Mark Mitera.

Carle was leapfrogged by Subban and Weber in the Habs depth chart the last couple of years, and by St. Denis this season, and was seen as expendable by the organization after he requested a trade. He has not yet made the leap to the NHL, but continues to put up solid numbers in his fifth year in the AHL.

Mitera is the highest paid player on the Dogs roster with a one-way $1.4M contract, yet holds a team worst -25 +/- rating and only 8 points. These are not flattering stats.

Habs lost on this trade, but only on a minor league level.

------------------------- ------------

October 23, the Habs traded Brock Trotter, former Bulldogs top scorer who had just returned from a year in Europe and a 7th-round draft pick in 2012 to Phoenix for Petteri Nokelainen and Garrett Stafford.

Nokelainen was necessary because the team did not have a fourth line center after White was lost for most of the season, Engqvist flopping, and the Blair Betts waiver pick-up being a total cock-up. He has played 45 games with the Habs, mostly going unnoticed.

Garrett Stafford has played a solid defensive game for the Dogs, but is a career AHL-er at this point.

Trotter has not played a game in the NHL so far this year, playing 32 games for the Phoenix AHL affiliate. He was traded to another AHL team in March, amidst declining stats.

The Habs win this trade, based on a serviceable season from the fourth line center.

nyuk.

Everyone is talking about a buyout for Scott Gomez. I still think that it's crazy, given that his cap hit after a buyout would be the following:
2012-13: $3,523,810
2013-14: $4,523,810
2014-15: $1,666,667
2015-16: $1,666,667

Still, something needs to happen here, and I think the answer to that is that a team that needs to reach the salary cap floor will trade for Gomez because his cap hit and his salary are sufficiently different for the last two years of his contract.
2012-13: $5,500,000 salary, $7,357,143 cap hit
2013-14: $4,500,000 salary, $7,357,143 cap hit

The price to send Gomez away? A top prospect or draft pick.
The return for Gomez+prospect? "Future considerations".

And if the Habs do buy him out? Thankfully 2013-2014, where his cap hit is the biggest, will see many top prospects like Beaulieu, Tinordi, Gallagher, and Holland joining the team on their entry level (aka cheap) contracts.

Bob McKenzie is also of the opinion that it is not likely that the Habs will buyout Gomez because of the cap hit. He is leaning towards the Habs burying his contract in the minors if a cap floor team doesn't pick him up. It's also possible that the Habs try the waiver re-entry route where they would split the cap space (and salary?) 50/50 with a team that decides to pick him up. Much less punishing than a buyout. Again, possible incentive for a cap floor team, as Gomez' final year comes at a cheaper $4.5M versus the $7.3M cap hit.

Maybe the bum can defect to the KHL? That would be an option as well, as I think that would mean that his contract is violated. No?

Thank you for your interest in applying for the vacant position of General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens. Please note that this application form is available in both French and English.

Why do you want to be the next general manager of the Montreal Canadiens?

( ) In current front office job, am getting tired of constantly being called an idiot by the media in only one language.
( ) Have a rare form of amnesia where I constantly forget how many Stanley Cups my team has won; would like work someplace where I'll be reminded every few minutes.
( ) Have reviewed the current roster and prospect pool, and enjoy the idea of having the next four or five springs off.
( ) Without revealing my current job, let's just say I get a little tired of being stuck in between two coaches pretending to want to fight each other.

Ideally, the successful candidate would be bilingual. Do you speak French?

( ) I speak fluent French.
( ) I speak high-school level French.
( ) I speak Randy Cunneyworth-level French.
( ) I didn't think I knew how to swear in French, but then I read the details of Scott Gomez's contract and found out I was wrong.

Montreal is known for a passionate fan base. What are your impressions of Canadiens fans?

( ) I admire their passion, although I'm still not sure why three of them are standing a few feet away while I fill this out and booing me.
( ) I recently worked for a southern-based US team and have never dealt with anything like what you have in Montreal, by which I mean hockey fans.
( ) Have to admit that it's nice to see some Canadian fans who know how to riot after a playoff game without immediately tagging themselves in photos of it on Facebook.
( ) I have completely forgiven them for forcing my trade to Colorado by booing me during a blowout loss and am certainly not applying for this job as part of some devious long-running revenge plot, so let's just change the subject.

It's important to learn from past mistakes. What would you do differently than previous Montreal GMs?

( ) Respond to every crisis by reflexively trading for players who can speak French, instead of responding to every crisis by reflexively trading for players whose names just make it seem like they can speak French.
( ) When trading for struggling veterans on a long-term deal, do not simply look at their recent stats and then assume that extra zero at the end of their cap hit must be a typo.
( ) No more firing coaches minutes before a game begins; have a big hook come down from the rafters and pluck them off the bench in the middle of a period instead.
( ) Maybe hire some scouts or something.

A successful GM can impart a sense of optimism to fans. Please highlight something positive about the current roster.

( ) The team is practically unbeatable when Andrei Markov is healthy, so that's like having a four point head start every year.
( ) Carey Price has firmly established himself as one of the NHL's elite goalies, so we should be able to trade him some spare parts any time now.
( ) Most of the roster in young and in good health, so it's possible that a few of them will still be playing when Josh Gorges' contract finally expires.
( ) Montreal has the only fans in the league that don't have to wake up each morning and immediately think "Man, I really hope my team doesn't go out and acquire Tomas Kaberle today".

Finally, if you are the chosen candidate, when would you be available to start work?

( ) Am available immediately.
( ) Am available starting next Monday
( ) Would need to give two weeks' notice at my current job.
( ) Will probably not be available until the end of next season, although the way things are going around here maybe check back with me in November.

Wait. Burkie? Is that you?

( ) Um… how do you hang up on an application form?

This concludes the application. If you chose to fill out the French version, please place it in a sealed envelope and submit it to our human resources department. If you filled out the English version, please save us all time by placing it directly into your recycling bin.

MONTREAL - Very sad news out of the Canadiens family this Saturday morning: former captain Émile (Butch) Bouchard, a member of the Habs from 1941-56, died early Saturday morning at Longueuil in South Shore Montreal, surrounded by his family. Big Butch was 92.

Bouchard captained the Canadiens from 1948-56, following goaler Bill Durnan with the C and succeeded by Maurice (Rocket) Richard. The 1966 Hall of Fame-inductee was a strapping stay-at-home defenceman who could get the job done with punishing force. He won the Stanley Cup four times with the Habs, incredibly arriving with the team just six years after he’d learned to skate.

Indeed. Word has it down to three candidates right now:
Marc Bergevin
Julien Brisebois
Pierre McGuire

McGuire probably won't get it since the Habs would have to wait until the end of the playoffs to make the nomiation due to McGuire's contract with NBC. This is unlikely since the Habs will want the new GM to have more time to get ready for the draft.

Brisebois would have to wait until his AHL team is out of the playoffs, and since they are favorite to win it is the same scenario as McGuire.

Andre Savard apparently never got a call from the Habs, Francois Giguere was called, but did not get a second interview like Bergevin, McGuire, and possibly Brisebois.

I would put my money on Bergevin at this point, which would mean a rookie GM for the Habs.

Here is Bergevin scoring the worst own-goal in NHL history (besides the historical significance of the Steve Smith blunder):

I REALLY hope that is fake news that's floating around. It makes no sense at all and will immediately sour me on the new management team.

I still doubt that they will buy him out. The terms are too punishing.

It's either $10M and $0 cap hit to hide him in Hamilton for the last two seasons of his contract, or $6.67M in salary and the following cap hit if he is bought out:
2012-13: $3,523,810
2013-14: $4,523,810
2014-15: $1,666,667
2015-16: $1,666,667 (from Capgeek.com)
Not worth the penalty to save $3.33M in actual salary IMO.
I don't know however if the No-Motion Clause restricts Gomez from being sent down to the AHL. That would be a whole different story.

Heck, I would try re-entry waivers before I try buyout. If Gomez was picked up by another team on re-entry waivers his cap hit on the Habs would be:
2012-2013: $3,678,571
2013-2014: $0

Either way, the following cap hit is simply unacceptable:
2012-2013: $7,357,143
2013-2014: $7,357,143

Fuck that rumour. The Habs just hired a new GM and there is still the slim possibility of an amnesty clause with the new CBA. No one has a clue what they are gonna do but I wouldnt be a fan of that buy-out based on the first two years. Just suck it up and bury him in the minors if need be.

Confirmed by my contact at the NHL that a No Trade Clause (NTC) does not mean that a player is immune to being sent down to the AHL. If it was a No Motion Clause (NMC) that's different. Gomez thankfully has a NTC.

I knew it!
Not only was Gauthier in charge of pro scouting when the awful Gomez deal happened, meaning he liked what he saw in the horribly slumping Gomez in New York, but he also has his fingerprints on the whole deal.

  • Edmonton Journal Said:

Why did Habs trade McDonagh to N. Y.?

There’s been much talk in Montreal of beefing up the Canadiens pro-scouting department now that Marc Bergevin has arrived as the ever-smiling general manager.

Despite the dour Pierre Gauthier, the former GM, nobody can say Montreal’s amateur scouts have failed in their duties in the last few years.

The 2007 draft brought the Habs Ryan McDonagh, Max Pacioretty and P.K. Subban in the first 43 picks. How is that for a trifecta?

Oh yeah, McDonagh isn’t in Montreal anymore. He played 53 minutes for the New York Rangers in that triple overtime game against the Washington Capitals on Wednesday. Seeing McDonagh take that wallop from Matt Hendricks, the one that almost ripped his head from his shoulders, then see him play another 30 or so shifts as if the hit were, as the Monty Python actors used to say is “just a flesh wound,” is to see a true warrior in action.

The trade of McDonagh to the Rangers to get Scott Gomez came on Bob Gainey’s watch when he was the GM. This should tarnish Gainey’s reputation for knowing who can play in the NHL and who can’t, but several sources say Gauthier’s fingerprints were really all over this one.

“Bob’s daughter had died (swept overboard at sea while working on a training ship) before this and he was letting Pierre (his confidant) do a lot of the work. Pierre didn’t like McDonagh, for some reason. Saw him play in the world juniors and didn’t like him. The scouts loved McDonagh, though. When he was traded, they couldn’t believe it,” said a source close to the scene.

“At least make up your mind on McDonagh after he’s played a few seasons.”

Instead, McDonagh was dealt on June 30, 2009 while he was still attending the University of Wisconsin, after he had finished his junior year there. He had just turned 20.

“The scouts didn’t think he was going to put up a lot of points, but he was big (213 pounds) and he competed,” said the source.

How would he look as Subban’s safety blanket in Montreal today? McDonagh, Subban, Josh Gorges and a healthy Andrei Markov on defence? Pretty good.

McDonagh for Gomez, who might well be buried in the minors next season so the Habs can save his $7.35 million US salary-cap hit, has to go down as one of the most one-sided trades in the last few years.

Bergevin, while too nice of a guy to shovel dirt on his predecessors, is probably grinding his teeth over that one.

Gomez has gone from 59 points to 38 points to 11 points in his three years in Montreal. He won two Stanley Cup rings in New Jersey and has 99 points in 140 career playoff games, but he looks done. How can that be? He’s only 32. Ray Whitney of the Phoenix Coyotes turn 40 on Tuesday. Teemu Selanne of the Anaheim Ducks turns 42 in July.

Lots of rumours floating around regarding Larry Robinson. In an interview with TVA Sports, Larry Robinson's agent confirmed what Bryan Hayward told me earlier this year, in that two years ago Robinson called the Canadiens offering his services and Gauthier never called him back. The agent SLAMS the old management and offers hope that Robinson would be willing to listen if Montreal called him. Very frank interview, especially given that the Devils are still in the playoffs.

  • Gazette Article Said:
The Gazette’s Dave Stubbs spoke with many people from around the world of hockey Friday to gather their reactions to the retirement of Red Fisher:

Gary Bettman, NHL commissioner: “When I think of Red, I think of the fact that there’s probably nobody more knowledgeable, more connected to the game, more passionate about the game and more devoted to the history of the game. Red has transcended the careers of so many great players, particularly in Montreal. He has lived through generations and the evolution of this game. I have nothing but respect and personal admiration for him. There’s nobody more entitled to (retirement) than Red. He’s given so much of himself and his life to this game. I think he’s irreplaceable and we’re grateful for all of his contributions. People in sports get judged by their longevity and nobody in any aspect of our game has a longevity like Red’s.”

Geoff Molson, Canadiens principal owner: “I had lunch with Red very recently to get to know him a little better. He knew my family quite well. He knew my great-uncle, Senator Hartland Molson, very well, and obviously those were the days when we were winning lots of Stanley Cups. He travelled with the team, a little differently back then, and spent a lot of time with people, and with my Uncle Hartland. Here I am, three generations later, having lunch with this guy and that’s pretty amazing. The reason I wanted to meet with Red is because he’s so full of information that could help me in my future here. I wanted to get his perspective on his history with owners of this team, especially my family, and how he experienced it in the past and his thoughts about how it should be experienced in the future. It was a really interesting lunch – Red told me a lot of great stories that I didn’t know. He’s seen everything. He’s a man of integrity and the way he tells stories, the way he positions them, is always in a way that integrity comes first. Some call him stubborn but I call him someone who has principles, and he’s stuck with them and followed them. As I listened, as he was telling me stories, his guidance to me was to maintain that high level of integrity – to make sure you continue to respect people for the right reasons, whether they be journalists, players, coaches, whomever. His examples went back three generations of Molsons. He’s seen us operate. He knows I’m young, but when he tells me stories about his experiences with my great-uncle, Hartland, and my grandfather, Thomas, he’s telling them for a reason. He’s picking stories to send messages, for sure.”

George Gillett Jr., former Canadiens owner: “Red’s a genius, a legend, a man with great memories who was kind enough to share them with his readers. His perspective was unique. He may be the longest-serving sportswriter at a major daily in North America. Every great community has a conscience and every great sports team has a conscience. I think Red was, in a very unique way, the conscience of sports in Montreal and particularly the Canadiens.

Jacques Demers, coach of 1993 Canadiens, the last Habs team to win the Stanley Cup: Red is the greatest hockey writer in the history of the NHL and among the greatest sportswriters of all time. He’s a legend, an icon. He opened the door to so many reporters who looked up to him. One thing about Red is he had a sense of humour. You could kid with him. And nobody was like Red to get a scoop. And he did it without blasting people. He didn’t make his name by blasting people and putting people down. If you did something he didn’t like, he’d write it. But after reading his story, you were the one who wanted to change. You felt that if Red wrote it, you didn’t blame the writer. Maybe it’s me who should look myself in the mirror. Nobody comes close to Red. He’s in his own unique place. Others were good but Red is by far the greatest hockey writer of all time.”

Jean Béliveau, former Canadiens captain: Red’s very fortunate that he’s able to still do at almost 86 what he’s enjoyed all his life. He’s had a lot of connections that he could call almost anyone at any time. If Red wrote a negative article about you, you knew that he was probably right, that you were going through a tough time or being too lazy on the ice. If you wanted to know something, you’d give Red a call and he always had an idea. He had so much experience that hockey people – general managers and owners of other franchises – knew they’d have a fair, honest assessment of what Red was thinking.”

Henri Richard, former Canadiens captain: “He’s retiring, eh? (laughs) Red told me that when I retired from hockey that he would, too. That was about 35 years ago. I really like Red, he’s something else. I was pretty good friends with him. He was all right, he was a good friend to me in hockey. Last time I saw him, I just said, “For chrissakes, Red, are you still working?”

Serge Savard, former Canadiens captain: Red had a pretty good run, eh? I was expecting he’d write a farewell column. He should do that, definitely. He should describe his whole career, the owners and players and all the great events he covered. Those early days weren’t like today. Players became friends with Red and (Montréal-Matin’s) Jacques Beauchamp. They were close to the stars around the league – Bobby Orr, Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita. Red shouldn’t go without saying goodbye. He had the ability to write his message without hurting anybody. I don’t recall him blasting players, he was very protective of the game and the players. He knew a lot of stuff he would never publish. Not like today, with cameraphones. That’s why the players were so confident with Red. He was fair. Sometimes he had his mind made up about something and you could convince him he was wrong and he would buy it. You look at him and talk to him and he looks like a stubborn guy, but really he’s not. Still today, even though I’ve been away from the game, I still give him a call to go for lunch. I don’t do that with other reporters.”

Yvan Cournoyer, former Canadiens captain: “How many times did Red say he’d retire? (laughs) Red and Jacques Beauchamp were the class of the class. He had the right way to say when someone was playing good or bad. That’s why he was so respected. Not just Montreal players, but all players in the NHL knew Red. He did everything, he covered a lot of things, he knew the game very well and he knew what to write about. Good job, Red.”

Guy Carbonneau, former Canadiens captain: “Red was always somebody who was interesting, honest with everybody. He wasn’t easy to approach, but once you knew him, he was quite a character. I’ve heard of a few stories about Red and Canadiens rookies (laughs) and fortunately I wasn’t one of them.”

Dickie Moore, Canadiens Hall of Famer and lifelong Fisher friend:“He’d been telling me he was going to retire, but … I have a picture on my wall – Red wrote a story about me when I was in junior. My whole family’s in it. Unbelievable. A real family memory. (Long-time mutual friend) Irv Liverman and I would talk Red out of retirement. I told him, ‘You’re going to be gone a long time, don’t be too fast!’ We’ve been around so long together. Red’s always been there when I’ve needed him. You couldn’t find a better friend.”

Dr. David Mulder, long-time Canadiens physician and chief surgeon: “I can remember talking to Red a couple years ago, saying ‘You’re too young to retire.’ He’s a patient of mine but also a very special friend and we go back a long way. I’ve always appreciated his slant on the hockey stories. We’ve disagreed and debated once in awhile but what I’ve admired most is his thoughtful human-interest approach to people like Jean Béliveau, Sam Pollock or Saku Koivu. He brought an element that very few sportswriters could approach. It was down to earth, from the heart and always very meaningful. When Red and I would get distracted from my seeing him as a patient and I’d express my hockey worries about solving this, that or the other, he’d say, “Doc, it’s only a game. Red always tells it like it is. We don’t always agree but we have a respect for one another which goes along with a long relationship.”

Steve Shutt, Canadiens Hall of Famer: “Red is from a different era of reporting, and he was one of the last reporters for whom many of the stories were off the record. That was an era when reporters travelled with the guys. They were part of the team, and there was a lot of stuff that went on that he knew he could write and couldn’t write. The guys respected that. That era is long gone. If some of the guys had a problem, they might even go to him as a liaison. Some of the best times I had with him were when we were doing the radio broadcasts for CJAD, between periods. Some of the stuff we did was hilarious. I remember one time we were talking about salaries. He asked me how much I made in my first year and I said $100,000. He said, ‘How many goals did you score?’ I told him eight. ‘How many did you score the next year?’ I told him 15. ‘How many the third year?’ Thirty, I told him. He said, ‘THAT’S when I would have paid you the $100,000.’ So the next week, I pulled out one of his articles from the 1950s. He was talking about some guy being a hipper-dipper left-winger, and I’m reading this on the air, killing myself laughing. He just grabbed it out of my hands and threw it out the booth into the Forum seats below.”

Johnny Bower, Toronto Maple Leafs Hall of Fame goalie: “Red was a gentleman through and through. I wish him all the best in his retirement. I haven’t heard a bad word from anybody, that he criticized the players. He called it the way he saw it. He was always fair to everybody and he really treated me real good.”

Glen Sather, New York Rangers president and GM and one of Fisher’s best friends in hockey: “We’ve had lots of fun together, lots of laughs. When I played in Montreal, Red was kind enough to talk to me even though I wasn’t a star on the team. We got along well and our relationship just built from there. I told him that (Habs coach) Scotty Bowman had once asked me a bunch of questions about the strategic part of the game (while Sather was playing), and I told him what I thought. Red said to me, ‘What did he tell you after that?’ And I said that Scotty told me I’m be back next year. ‘No,’ Red said, ‘you’re going to be traded for sure after he said that to you.’ And of course, Red was right. I had him come to Banff and speak to kids at our hockey school for a couple of years. Of course, I overpaid him. He’d talk to the kids about life in the NHL, tell them stories about players – Rocket, Béliveau, all the great stars around the league. The kids were just mesmerized by him. We hiked, we were up and down the mountains, we had dinners together. (Red’s wife) Tillie was with him, of course. I nicknamed her Tillie Terrific. When I call Red to this day, I say, ‘Is Terrific around?’ One thing about Red is that nobody dictates anything to him. (Legendary Canadian painter) Tom Thomson once said, ‘I’m responsible for my life and my work and I’m going to do both in the way that I choose.’ And that’s sort of Red as he decides to retire now. He’s a great guy, He’s got an entire legacy behind him that some players will never understand.”

TVA might have out-scooped RDS saying that Sylvain Lefebvre is coming back to the Habs as head coach of the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Not sure what this means for current head coach Clement Jodoin, but probably nothing good. Thank God that management does not count on the salary cap because the Habs payroll would be through the roof seeing as they are still paying Gauthier, Martin, Pearn, Cunneyworth, and Ladouceur next season.

Right now the Bergevin for Gauthier 'trade' looks like the Russ Courtnall for John Kordic trade, but let's reserve judgement for now. Jury's still out on the entire new management structure.

The hype behind Bergevin's hire reminds me of the hype of Gainey's hire. We all celebrated Gainey's arrival as the second coming of Sam Pollock, yet history will remember his tenure as an unsuccessful five year plan, pushing Price on Carbonneau when he wasn't yet ready, blowing up the team, Gomez for McDonaugh, an unlikely run to the conference finals in 2010, and the unfortunate handover to Gauthier. Not a glowing review.

Gauthier will be remembered for being a turd of epic proportions, fucking up all the goodwill gained with the fanbase leading up to the Centennial in a single miserable season.

My lowest expectation of Bergevin is that he will be better than Gauthier. I hopefully won't be disappointed.

I dont care what you or any other dipshit says. Stanley Cup aside, Gainey's tenure was a massive success.

The Habs were at their lowest in history, for years too let me remind you, when he came on board and he brought respectability back. He brought winning back and he brought the playoffs, creating a team that won the Eastern Conference as well as a team who made it to the Stanley Cup semi-finals. The prospect cupboard couldnt have been worse either and that changed under his watch. Do I need to remind you how excited you were when the Habs were one of the youngest teams in the league (if not the youngest) and how great the future was looking? They almost got there, and they would have too if it werent for you meddling kids and your dog.

When he was hired he was saying what every GM in every sport in every city was saying "We plan to bring a championship here in 5 years" so stop taking him so literal on that point. Bergevin said he wants to "re-establish a winning culture" so make sure you hold him to that because reading between the lines he wants to make the Habs a dynasty again.

Not hard to look good between such luminaries as Rejean Houle and Pierre Gauthier. Yes, Gainey did a good job. I like your glass half full version of his stint. Our two interpretations pretty much paint a real good picture of the highs and lows of his tenure.
I agree that Gainey era will be remembered above all else as an emergence from the depths of hell. I love Gainey and wish him all the best in Dallas.

I wish ill to Gauthier for being an invisible, inaccessible, and isolated GM who almost completely ruined everything that Gainey accomplished in his time.

Fact: 95% of Habs fans are happy about Bergevin being the new GM because he represents the return of class, smarts and all around niceness to the organization.

Fact: 5% of Habs fans are morons.

Marc Bergevin is the light at the end of the tunnel and Habs fans indeed feel like they’re in heaven after going through 2ish years of pure hell.
While Habs fans were quick to cut the cord connecting Gauthier to the Habs I want to go back for one more drag through mud…considering that’s what Gauthier did to the Canadiens during his time as Supreme Overlord of the team.
Gauthier and Bergevin couldn’t be more different, here are some comparisons to prove just how different they actually are.

Marc Bergevin: Is very patient and friendly to the media. He graciously answered questions and made himself available for public appearances.
Pierre Gauthier: You paid for that cookie, right?

Marc Bergevin: Will be patient and tactical while exploring trade avenues with other General Managers throughout the league.
Pierre Gauthier: Swears that is was Gainey’s idea to trade Ryan McDonagh

Marc Bergevin: Has 20 years as an NHL player, time as an assistant coach, head of player development and Assistant General Manager on his impressive resume.
Pierre Gauthier: Has worked for the IRS, been a dentist specializing in root canals and was the General Manager of the Ottawa Senators.

Marc Bergevin: Is an overall nice guy.
Pierre Gauthier: Took the term “Nice guys finish last” way too seriously.

Marc Bergevin: Is a huge fan of the Bee Gees.
Pierre Gauthier: Gives everyone the heebeegeebees.

Marc Bergevin: Has a great sense of humour often being cited as a fantastic practical joker.
Pierre Gauthier: Idea of a joke is trading Mike Cammalleri for Rene Bourque. Get it?

Marc Bergevin: Is not a big drinker but does enjoy going for a few beers with his buddies every now
and then.
Pierre Gauthier: Drinks a glass full of Habs fans’ tears every night before bed.

Marc Bergevin: Knows this is a bit weird but loves drinking soft drinks through a straw.
Pierre Gauthier: Just sucks.

Marc Bergevin: Believes that the key to winning is by playing as a team.
Pierre Gauthier: Winning?

Marc Bergevin: Is all for the natural progression of the sport of Hockey.
Pierre Gauthier: Wants the red line added back in and thinks there’s too much shot blocking going on.

Marc Bergevin: Brings a breath of fresh air to the Canadiens organization.
Pierre Gauthier: Usually needs a breath of fresh air due to his head being up his own ass 90% of the time.

Marc Bergevin: Is keeping his distance from the student protestors, his business is Hockey.
Pierre Gauthier: Was overheard saying “Hey, aren’t those fees a bit too high?” to Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois.

Marc Bergevin: Is heavily invested in the future of the organization.
Pierre Gauthier: Is heavily invested in Facebook.

Marc Bergevin: Is spending time carefully searching for the perfect Head Coach.
Pierre Gauthier: Probably sits in first class while his wife and kids sit in coach.

Marc Bergevin: Doesn’t believe in quitting.
Pierre Gauthier: Doesn’t believe in quitting, he just does a terrible job and eventually gets fired.

Marc Bergevin: Wants to create a friendly repertoire with his players.
Pierre Gauthier: That will be $1,250, Mr. Cammalleri.

Marc Bergevin: Gives him a high five every time he runs into Youppi! in the hallway.
Pierre Gauthier: Yells “IT’S BACK” and runs away every time he runs into Youppi! in the hallway.

Hahahhaa. Good one.

See those 5-10 game package ticket prices? Jesusfuck. Its getting close to me being priced out of the market. When a large draft is 15 bucks and a Molson Zone ticket is getting close to the same price as a mortgage payment, its time to take stock. I absolutely love my trips to MTL with the boys more than most things in this world but the price gouging is getting out of hand. One trip for me this year, at best.

Well, the good news is it's still 22 bones to stand at the rail at the Corel Centre and get absolutely shit faced (and it's kind of a home game for the Habs when they're in town).

Geez. There isn't even an official season at this point because of the potential lockout, and the Habs are already going and getting themselves injured all over the place. First Rene Bourque rips an abdominal wall and needs surgery that will keep him out until November at least, and now Mike Blunden takes a puck to the face during an unofficial scrimmage...

Charles Hudon, Habs' 5th round pick in 2012, continues to stand out from the pack in the juniors by scoring 3 goals in 4:30 minutes of the 3rd period today to win the game 4-3 for Chicoutimi against Victoriaville tonight. He also had an assist, meaning he had a point on every goal for his team.

Booche might follow this up by rightfully pointing out that juniors don't mean shit, but in this time of strife I take the good news wherever I can get it.

Blake Geoffrion is one lucky dude.

------------------------

Blake Geoffrion's father: 'We're lucky that he's alive'
Former Predators forward recovering from surgery to repair skull fracture

When Danny Geoffrion thinks about all his family has been through the last three days, one thought about his son Blake comes to mind.

“We’re lucky that he’s alive,” Danny said.

On Friday, Blake, a Montreal Canadiens prospect who grew up in Brentwood and was drafted by the Predators, was hit hard in an American Hockey League game by Syracuse Crunch defenseman Jean-Philippe Côté.

The hit sent Blake, who was playing for the Hamilton (Ontario) Bulldogs, soaring off the ice. When Blake landed, Danny said, the bone two inches above Blake’s left ear hit Côté’s skate. Blake’s skull was fractured and he had emergency surgery.

“They removed the piece of his skull that was about the size of a silver dollar,” Danny said by phone on Monday morning. “They had to replace that with titanium and metal mesh. And that’s what the plate consists of, with the screws and all that, so he now has that in his head. It was unreal.”

The game took place at Montreal’s Bell Centre. Danny and his wife Kelly were in the stands when the play happened.

The Geoffrions are a hockey family, and they have seen their fair share of traumatic injuries.

Blake’s great grandfather, Howie Morenz, and grandfather, Bernie “Boom Boom” Geoffrion are Canadiens’ legends and Hockey Hall of Famers. Morenz died in 1937 after surgical complications from a severely broken leg sustained in a game at the Montreal Forum. In 1958, Bernie suffered a ruptured bowel during a Canadiens’ practice and needed emergency surgery to save his life.

Blake’s injury quickly went from bad to worse.

He was able to skate off the ice under his own power, his head bleeding. Five minutes later, Danny received a call that Blake was being taken to the hospital. In the ambulance, Blake was his typical, happy-go-lucky self.

“Blake was being Blake,” Danny said.

About 30 minutes after they arrived at the hospital, Danny was asked to consent for surgery to be performed on Blake. Shortly after Danny and Kelly left Blake and went to the waiting area, their son had gone into convulsions.

“Parts of the skull had gotten into the brain,” Danny said. “So they cleaned all that out, and took care of the little bleeding he did have, which was another major thing. He was very, very lucky.”

Danny said that around 1 a.m., the doctor informed him of his son’s condition. But they needed to do a CAT scan, and if they found increased swelling, it could mean brain damage.

“That’s what we had to listen to,” Danny said, his voice quivering over the phone.

Danny has since left Montreal — Blake’s mother and his fiancée are still there — but he talked to his son Monday morning. Danny said Blake is walking, but cautioned that it’s a one-day-at-a- time process. Blake was removed from intensive care on Sunday.

“He’s doing OK, he’s a little raspy, not taking any calls or anything like that because of the tube that they had to insert in his throat made everything raw,” Danny said. “But he’s in good spirits and tells everybody think you for all the emails, tweets and texts.”

Blake sent out a message on Twitter: “Thank you to everyone for their kind words and support. Today has been a little tougher but continuing to get better.”

The Predators drafted Blake in 2006 and traded him to the Canadiens in February. His hockey future is now unclear. There’s no timetable for this type of situation, though the Canadiens said in a press release that Blake is expected to make a full recovery.

Blake, who has his degree from the University of Wisconsin, suffered multiple concussions in the past, which gives his family cause for extra concern.

“You ask me, ‘Is he going to be raring to go in a year from now?’ Yeah, absolutely, probably if everything goes well, probably in eight months to 10 months, I feel like he’ll be a race horse ready to hit it again,” Danny said. “But now you can’t just look at that aspect of it. You have to look at quality of life when he’s 50 years old.”

Before they can start thinking about the future, the family is mostly concerned with Blake’s present.

“Now, we need Blake to be back 100 percent strong,” Danny said.

In the digital age, the stamped cards and letters keep finding this Canadiens icon. If there is one Canada Post employee with ironclad job security, it’s the letter carrier who delivers to the address of Jean Béliveau.

The mail comes written by computer and by crayon. Simple words of encouragement. Hero worship. Brazen requests. Hockey cards and photos and memorabilia for a signature in the familiar, flowing script with which he has signed his name thousands of times over six decades.

The volume increases come the holidays. Many of the scores of Christmas cards are addressed by the same people who have been sending Béliveau their season’s greetings for longer than the recipient can remember, from across this continent and far beyond.

On this Christmas Eve, the Canadiens’ 81-year-old Hall of Fame legend and his wife, Élise, will dine at the home of their daughter, Hélène, in the company of her daughters — their granddaughters — Mylène and Magalie.

On Christmas night, they again will be together as a family for dinner at Béliveau’s South Shore condominium.

And as Le Gros Bill cherishes every moment of each of his days, his strength gently ebbing and flowing following the stroke he suffered 10 months ago, he admits to feeling “kind of sorry” about one thing:

“For nearly 60 years, I’ve answered almost every card that I’ve received,” Béliveau said during a lengthy talk a few days ago. “But this year, I can’t. I just don’t have the strength.

“I read every one that comes to me, to my home and directed from the Bell Centre. I only wish that I could let these people know that I’ve received their cards and wishes.”

Béliveau asks that his thank-yous be conveyed in these paragraphs, and so they are.

“I wasn’t up to answering any of my mail when I got home, but still it arrived,” he said, having spent nine weeks in the care of the Montreal General Hospital and an east-end rehabilitation centre after he was struck at home on Feb. 27.

“Hélène got the mail from the Bell Centre, gathered what was at home, read it all and had it all ready for me, maybe 500 pieces. We (recently) did it all in the space of about three or four days.”

Replying to this relentless river of correspondence was like bailing a leaky rowboat that fills with water more quickly than it can be emptied.

It was four months ago that I had last spoken at length with hockey’s greatest ambassador, on the occasion of his 81st birthday. Six months earlier, Béliveau had fallen ill over dinner, having suffered his second stroke, and been rushed to the Montreal General. Many, including some of those closest to him, feared the worst.

“I knocked on the door,” Béliveau told me in August, alluding to the Pearly Gates, “but it seems they weren’t ready for me.”

Happily, St. Peter couldn’t find the reservation.

“I have no complaints,” Béliveau said at the time, a sentiment he still expresses today. “I’m a very fortunate guy, blessed with my health. Because I should be gone.”

Ten months after his latest close call, having earlier survived the first stroke, cardiac issues, cancer and abdominal aneurysms, Béliveau has wisely slowed his famously frantic pace, now relaxing with one book after another.

A long-time fan of biographies, he’s currently reading the life story of the late boxer Arturo Gatti; in his on-deck circle is the biography of Apple founder Steve Jobs, then a near-1,000-page doorstop of a business bio “and about 25 books in line after that,” he said with a laugh.

Béliveau is reading on the nights he’d normally be watching hockey. He says he’s saddened that the NHL lockout has ground on past its third month, the labour dispute marking its 100th day on Monday.

“It doesn’t make any sense,” he said. “I have a feeling that we’ll see hockey played, but this has lasted longer than I thought it would. It certainly would be no good if they go the whole year without any games.”

In a conversation we had during the 2004-05 lockout, a dispute that would kill that entire season, Béliveau said he believed the players then were “completely wrong. They’re making a big mistake, a terrible mistake.”

His words were a concussion grenade among the BB pellets coming from former players and hockey executives. Only to Béliveau’s comments did the NHLPA react with an official statement of rebuttal, understanding that this man’s words carried dramatic weight.

This time, Béliveau doesn’t take sides. His heart aches for the people on hockey’s periphery, the small businesses and game-night employees who absolutely need what they earn, often second incomes, during an NHL season.

He speaks without acidic judgment about the long-term, huge-money contracts being handed players by teams “that are their own worst enemy.” At no time ever has Béliveau begrudged the modern NHL player what this twisted market will pay, though he wonders aloud about the wisdom of the Minnesota Wild tossing a combined $196 million to free agents Ryan Suter and Zach Parise over 13 seasons.

The career of the average NHLer today is five years; it’s a fraction of the 18 Béliveau played from 1953-71 in winning 10 Stanley Cups for the Canadiens, with whom he’ll celebrate a 60-year relationship next Oct. 3.

“If he loses one year (with this lockout), that’s a lot on his career,” Béliveau said of the five-season player.

“Maybe we could have used agents in our time, but we played because we loved the game, for the friendship among ourselves in the room and on the road.

“The situation was a lot different in my day, but I was very happy when the owners were making money. That was the best security for our paycheques.

“At the time, I compared what I was earning to what my father was making. He was raising a family of eight and I was being paid five, six times what he was. To me, what I was getting out of hockey was big.

“But we loved the game. We were passionate about it. That passion and wearing the Canadiens uniform were the most important things, which is not the case today. If the sweater doesn’t fit here, another one might fit somewhere else. I can’t blame the players, trying to get as much as they can, but …”

Always the statesman, his sentence was left incomplete.

Béliveau says he has good days and those that aren’t quite as good, admitting he’s still a little weak. His home-office treadmill is not a walk in the park.

“At 81, when you get up in the morning and you feel tired, exercise is not as pleasurable as it used to be,” he said, laughing softly.

From shortly before his stroke last February through season’s end, Béliveau and Élise, his wife of 59 years, were not in their regular Bell Centre seats three rows behind the Canadiens bench. If the lockout has had any benefit, it’s that he’s had a little more time to build some strength for his return to the rink.

On this Christmas Eve, Béliveau is counting his blessings, surrounded by his family. But never too far from his mind is his sport, which continues to define much of his life.

“I hope to see hockey for the fans, the players and the owners. I intend to go to the games again,” he said, and watch him bring the house down when he’s shown on the scoreboard.

“I enjoy it. Élise enjoys it. My granddaughters, too. My balance is a little tricky and I might have a little problem getting up the stairs (from the Canadiens dressing-room corridor to his seat), but it’s just a few steps.

“Yes, I intend to be back. The fans and I have been waiting for so long. It’s time, and it will be nice to be there.”
